Biometric advancements in technology - must read

Recent attempts at using holographic and fibre optic technology have received critical acclaim including a holographic laser projector that projects interactive images onto any surface. For example, a working keyboard could be projected onto your desk

Eye Tracking: Control Anything With Your Eyes

Eye tracking technology has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Traditionally used by marketers, two companies are now building systems that allow disabled people to control their wheelchairs by simply moving their eyes.

Biometrics: Receive Emails Direct to Your Vision

Back in November, we reported on the story that bionic contact lenses are being created to view emails directly in your eyes. According to our poll, a staggering 56% of respondents would be willing to use this type of biometric technology.

Your boss too checks your Facebook profile

Sharing your thoughts and experiences with your friends on social networking sites has become a customary way of communication.

But not all the personal two-pence you put out on the webscape is safe with employers now keeping an eye on your online antics. In an age where blogs, micro-blogs and social networking sites are blurring the line between private and professional lives, you could do well to wise up and work on your manners to 'block' yourself from risking your job.

Share smart
To share anything and everything on your Facebook (FB), Twitter or blog is not as good an idea as being judicious is. Whatever enters the web world seldom gets erased completely and software is designed to fish out 'deleted' information even after years. If your luck is star-crossed, an offensive 'comment' you made and 'deleted' can also be retrieved and used against you.

Shishir Dave, a seasoned HR (Human Resources) consultant, says, "In a flourishing metro, Facebook-Twitter usage is very high among the working class. The trend of online surveillance is catching up and there are agencies to do background checks. We get many requests from employers to check up online profiles of prospective employees to find out whether (s)he is a job-hopper, party animal, alcoholic, has criminal antecedents, etc. You never know which post or remark may boomerang on you. If you are already down and your boss needs to hammer a final nail in, even an abusive tweet or a post could be it."

Ask yourself : What impression does my online paraphernalia give to an employer?

Think before you upload
An employer discovering unflattering or inappropriate photos can be disastrous to your image. Uploading intimate, obscene, wasted-looking or drunken party pictures are obviously a strict nono. Un-tagging yourself from friends' indecent pictures may also save blushes. Dave says, "We usually warn out-of-hand employers to behave themselves. It is better to give them the benefit of doubt once. If the employee persists with his loose-talks or improper behaviour online, we issue him/her a notice and eventually decide to sack them. But in most instances, a warning has always sufficed."

Ask yourself: Do I want colleagues to see this?

Choose 'friends' wisely
In US and UK, tons of employees have been given the boot for wisecracks online. A Massachusetts teacher, Dr June Talvitie was shown the door for calling her students 'germ bags' and their parents 'snobby, arrogant' on Facebook. An IT teacher in the UK was shown the door for posting a 'jesting' comment on her rowdy teenage students. In both instances, a school staffer had squealed on the professors.

So think twice before adding someone who you haven't met or before posting an off-hand comment. "You never know how and via which friend your post can land up in the newsfeed of higherups," Dave adds.

HR assistant in a British bank, Stephanie Bon, got fired for her post: "Our new CEO gets 4,000 pounds an hour. I get 7. That's fair." Again, it was Bon's colleague who reported her. Dave explains, "The work ethics in America and Europe is very strong and hence employees run into trouble if they make inappropriate comments. Calling your boss an ass in the US may fetch you a libel suit and pink slip, but in India, you get away saying a lot of things online as a proper system is not in place to deal with these instances."

Ask yourself: Will this get me fired?

Safe surfing
To keep your networking profile secure, up your privacy settings to the hilt. But then, nothing actually is private as the internal security walls are not too difficult to break open with the correct software. "HR can easily crack open private information of an employee if it receives a tip-off on his misbehaviour," says Dave. "But even if the top boss wants, it is logistically impossible for the HR of big companies to track employees' online lives. So unless a staffer complains against a particular post, we don't keep a watch on him."

Ask yourself: Would I say this aloud at work?

Overdoing the updates
Status updates can get really immediate, with dense minute-byminute account, especially with the on-the-move Tweeple sorts. But it may not always be a grand idea to let the world know which mall you are shopping in or which coffee shop you are chilling out at. This cautionary goes especially for girls, who could be enlightening their potential stalker with dangerous details. Let us not even get in to how your boss and colleagues will think of you as somebody who does nothing except fool around on FB or Twitter.

Ask yourself: Does anyone care if I'm buying toilet paper?

Being overcautious online spoils the sole purpose of its carefree existence. Just go easy on excesses. The safest bet for cribbing and ranting about your depressing job would be at that good old haunt - the nearest bar!

Facebook Messenger rivals BlackBerry Messenger

LONDON: Social networking site Facebook has launched its own mobile messaging service to challenge the marketing space occupied by the Blackberry Messenger (BBM).

The app, called 'Facebook Messenger', launched in the US only, allows members of the social networking site send instant messages on their mobile for free to anyone in their 'friends' list.

In a direct bid to rival BBM, the new Facebook app, also allows people to send messages to friends on their mobile contacts list and push out group messages too, the Telegraph reports.

The free Facebook Messenger app is available on both Android and iOS devices, but there are no dates revealed for when it would be made available outside the US.

Facebook engineer Lucy Zhang wrote a blog post explaining the new service, "More and more of us rely on our phones to send and receive messages. But it isn't always easy to know the best way to reach someone on their phone. Should you send an email or text? Which will they check first? Did they even get your last message?"

"We think messaging should be easier than that. You should be able to write a message, click 'Send' and know that you will reach the person right away," he added.

BBM is understood to have over 45 million users around the world.

Facebook, having over 750 million users worldwide, might be able to steal away some of it market share in the growing mobile instant messenger market, the paper said.

Over 2.3 lakh MNP requests turned down in Delhi till July

Over 2.3 lakh requests for mobile number portability (MNP) have been rejected out of a total of 8.4 lakh requests till July 31 in Delhi licence service area on various grounds, the telecom ministry said Friday.

MNP, which is a service that allows mobile phone users to switch operators while retaining their phone number, was launched across the country Jan 20, 2011.

"Total 8,39,471 requests for MNP have been received in Delhi licence service area with all service providers till July 31 out of which MNP was allowed in 6,11,179 cases," Communications Minister Kapil Sibal informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

The grounds for rejection of MNP requests included use of wrong unique porting code, subsisting contractual obligations and blacklisted subscriber numbers, among others.

The minister said that 32.43 percent of the requests were rejected because of using wrong porting code, while 23.84 percent were denied the service due to subsisting contractual obligations with exit clause in subscriber agreement to which the subscriber had not complied with.

Over 18 percent of the requests were denied at donor operator network with records that the subscriber number is either blacklisted or has unsettled overdue bills while 14.23 percent of requests had to be turned down as they requested for the service within initial period of 90 days.

As per the MNP regulations and instructions, the MNP requests are to be settled in 7 days except in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, North East Licence Service Area for which the period is 15 days. Hence at a given point of time, certain number of requests are expected to be in process, the minister said.

Google launches custom tailored search feature

In a bid to trump Microsoft's Bing, Google will start to populate individual users' search results with posts that have been shared publicly by their connections on Google+.

The new feature, which works only when users are signed in to their Google accounts, aims to tailor results to individual tastes, the company said Friday.

The idea is if a user posts a note on Google+ about a link--be it to a restaurant's Web site, a news story, or a retail store's site--their Google+ connections are going to be more likely to want to see that site as well.

In a blog post, Sagar Kamdar, Google product manager, offered an example of a contact in one of his Google+ Circles posting a note about a Chinese restaurant in New York City.

When Kamdar searches for the restaurant, a note appears below the restaurant link saying his connection shared a post about the establishment.

"Now not only do I get some great reviews on the Web, I get a review from a friend about a restaurant, with recommendations about what dishes to order," Kamdar wrote.

"This is just the latest step in helping you find the most relevant information possible, personalised to your interests and the people you care about," he added.

In May, Microsoft's Bing rolled out a similar feature that elevates results that have received a "like" from a friend on Facebook. Bing's implementation requires users to be logged in to Facebook.

For both Google and Microsoft, the idea is to mimic the real world, where people often rely on friends for advice before making decisions about products, restaurants, hotels, and more, tech news website CNet.com said.

Hot browsers for your smartphone

BERLIN: There are more than 70 browsers for personal computers. The choice is not quite as extensive for smartphones, but it makes sense to keep an eye out for alternatives.

The mobile platform Android is especially open but there are programs for other systems specially designed for mobile internet usage. Included in that is also an economical handling of information, automatically filling out of forms, and syncing browser favourites with other devices.

The biggest selection is for the Google system Android. Its standard browser is not identical with Google Chrome but syncs the favourites with its PC version and can automatically fill out forms with repeated input. The 'Google Chrome to Phone' app allows links on a computer with a Chrome browser to be marked and sent to the telephone.

'Even though Chrome and the browser in Android are not identical, both share a lot of the same code,' said Google spokesman Stefan Keuchel. Android users also enjoy very much the Dolphin browser. 'You can surf very comfortably with tabs with it,' said Fabien Roehlinger from the internet portal AndroidPit. Among the pioneers of the mobile browsers is the Norwegian company Opera, which has developed two different programs for smart phones. Opera Mini compresses the web contents on an Opera server before sending it to the browser. This is especially useful if you have a tariff which limits the amount of data transferred and exceeding that limit is very expensive.

'Opera Mini is very beloved because it is economical, fast and intuitively operable,' said Roehlinger. Firefox for Android meanwhile is considered much slower by its users, but Firefox does allow smartphones to sync favourites, opened tabs, form information and passwords with a PC browser.

Another advantage is the 'Do Not Track' function. According to a spokeswoman for the Mozilla project, Valerie Ponell, users can have the comfort of knowing they will not be tracked by such things as personalised online advertising.

In a test by the Australian internet portal Lifehacker, Opera Mini was the faster browser on the Android devices followed by Dolphin, the Android browser, Opera Mobile and Firefox.

And which browser has the nicest interface? The author of the test, Kevin Purdy, said Opera Mobile 'possibly looks best of all the alternatives'.

If Apple had their way, only its own Safari browser could be used on the iPhone. But a couple of alternatives have made their way into the App Store. The Sphere software blends out all control panels and just shows the websites.

In order to bring the command bar back, the iPhone only needs to be lightly shaken. Also widely distributed is the browser Mercury, which can open many pages in their own tabs and prepare different themes according to the tastes of the user.

If you want to display certain webpages on a different browser, Atomic offers this useful possibility when one wants to avoid the mobile version of a website. Atomic also offers tabs as well as the possibility of differentiating the functions of finger gestures on the display.

The iPhone browser Mango comes from Korea and has been praised in the App Store for its appearance and speed.

Blackberry users often use the Bolt browser as an alternative. The app supports the new web standard HTML5 as well as websites with Flash. In addition, there is also geo-data support so the user can use the GPS function and publish their current position on corresponding websites.

The integrated browser on Symbian mobile phones from Nokia does not have the best reputation. The newly-developed Ovi browser is supposed to be better and utilises an especially efficient technology to compress web data.

As an alternative, there is Opera or the UC browser available for the iPhone, which displays a start page with often-viewed websites.

How to make Windows 7 multifunctional

Windows 7 is not just another pretty face. Underneath all those fancy Aero effects , transitions and translucent windows lies an operating system that has a many tricks up its sleeve. These are just a few.

God mode

If there is one single tweak you can do to Windows 7, God Mode should be it. God Mode works with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and is officially a hidden feature; something you won't find in the user manual. God Mode gives you all possible settings, control panel items, all possible configuration options in one place. To enable God Mode, make a new folder anywhere on the PC and name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8 E54-465 E-825 C-99712043 E01C}.

The folder icon will instantly change to one that looks like a control panel, and inside the folder you'll get one-click access to all the settings on your computer. The name is actually inconsequential , but a rather clever way of propagating the idea. So, if you use the code "Testing.{ED7BA470-8 E54-465 E-825 C-99712043 E01C}", it still works. These codes are part of Windows Globally Unique Identifiers of GUIDs. A full list of various GUIDs can be found at http:// goo.gl/9311U.

RSS wallpaper

If you're on an unlimited internet plan, you can enable an automatic RSS wallpaper with Windows 7. Many different themes for Windows 7 are available that take advantage of this feature. For example, download the Microsoft Bing theme from http:// goo.gl/iqwlW.

Once downloaded , double click the theme to activate and select the option to download the attachments when prompted. Then, right click on an empty area on the desktop and click 'personalize' to view the themes. Click the newly installed Bing theme and click 'Desktop Backgrounds'.

Here, you can change how often you want the desktop wallpaper to change and select between the wallpapers that have already been downloaded. Many more RSS themes for Windows 7 can be found with a simple search.

Windows 7 as Wi-Fi router

A free prog RAM called Connectify (www.connectify.me) works with Windows 7 to turn it into a Wi-Fi router, so that other nearby devices can connect and use the PC's internet connection.

This virtual Wi-Fi feature is only available in Windows 7 and it becomes possible to use the wireless adapter as a wireless hotspot. Another open-source software that does the same thing is Virtual Router Manager (http:// virtualrouter .codeplex.com).

Problem steps recorder

This Windows 7 tool can help you retrace any steps that lead to a problem you are facing. For example, if a certain sequence of events is leading to an error message, you can record your actions with the Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) and send it to a friend for diagnosis. To start the PSR, simply click the start button, type PSR and hit enter.

In the window that pops up, click the record button and perform the action needed. Once finished, give the file a name and it will get saved as a zip, including the problem details and screenshots of the actions you performed along the way.

Display colour calibration

Most laptop and desktop monitors are not properly colour calibrated, with the result that what you see onscreen may not be the same as what you print or what you see on other screens.

For a quick colour calibration of your display, click the Start button, type DCCW and hit enter. The Display Colour Calibration tool will start, to provide a guided, stepby-step process (In case you are using multiple monitors, move the DCCW window to the display you want to calibrate).

Automatic docking

These handy shortcuts can help with window docking; rather than resize windows manually (which is always an option), use the Windows key in combination with the four cursor keys to dock the active window in various locations.

Clicking Win + left will dock the active window to the left half of the screen, Win + up will maximize, Win + down will minimize and so on.

Mouse gestures

Windows 7 includes some helpful mouse gestures that work as shortcuts . If you have several programs open, to access the jump list (contextual menu) for each, you would normally right click on the program's icon in the taskbar. But if you left click and drag the cursor upwards, it performs the same action.

Or if you click and drag a window to the top of the screen, it maximizes the window. Drag it to the left or the right and the window will get docked to the left or right of the screen.

Customise the shut down button

The Windows 7 start menu is quite different from previous versions. If you need to Sleep or Hibernate the PC for example, you have to click the Start button and then click on the appropriate action in a sub menu.

To customize what the Shut Down button does, right click the Start button and click properties. Under the Start Menu tab, you can choose the default action for the Shut Down button.

Ready boost on steroids

Ready Boost is a Windows feature that uses a USB flash drive to provide an instant speed boost to your system. The feature uses the additional space on a USB drive as RAM and therefore the USB drive has to meet speed requirements to be used as a Ready Boost drive.

To check a USB flash drive for Ready Boost compatibility or to enable Ready Boost, simply plug a drive into an available port, open 'My Computer' , right click on the drive's icon and click 'Properties' . Here, you will see a tab for Ready Boost.

Note that you can either set a portion of the drive or the entire available space to be used for Ready Boost, but you will not be able to use that allocated space for anything else.

Ready Boost was also available on Windows Vista, but with Windows 7, the feature has been enhanced to include support for multiple drives and higher capacities . With Windows 7, if you have enough free USB ports and flash drives lying around, you can use them to provide a massive speed boost to your system.

Zany keyboard shortcuts
The Windows + Home key minimizes everything except the current window, Win + G displays the desktop gadgets in front of other windows, Win + + (plus key) activates the magnifier and enlarges the area of the screen you are looking at you can Shift + left click any window on the taskbar to open another instance of it. Some power users like to keep multiple instances and multiple windows running.

So for example, if you have 10 Windows explorer windows, and 10 each of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents open, using the standard Alt+Tab method to switch between them will be time consuming. Just hold down Ctrl + click on any explorer icon in the taskbar to cycle through only the explorer windows.

'World's first' glasses-free 3D TV hits stores

TOKYO: Toshiba has launched what it calls the world's first television that allows viewers to see 3D images without the need to wear special glasses, amid intensifying competition in the market.

Curious shoppers stopped to test out the screen at an electronics store in central Tokyo (Japan) as the 12-inch model of Regza GL1 Series went on sale.

The new model with a liquid crystal display carries a price tag of 119,800 yen (1,400 dollars). A 20-inch model will be released on Saturday.

The new 3D TV does not require users to wear special glasses, whereas other 3D-capable models require glasses that act as filters to separate images to each eye to create the illusion of depth.

Toshiba's screens use processing technology to create depth-filled images and the Regza GL1 Series allow users to switch between 2D and 3D on normal TV programmes.

Kazuhito Gunji, a public relations official at electronics retailer Bic Camera, said the company had received many inquiries from customers on when they can get their hands on the product.

Electronics stores are hoping that the release of the latest technology will help offset declining sales as government incentives for purchasing environment-friendly home appliances were reduced this month.

The hugely competitive TV sector is a challenge for many electronics makers given that customers are increasingly accustomed to declining prices, making it difficult for the industry to generate profits.

Sony on Monday said it may fall short of its sales goal of 25 million liquid crystal display TV sets this fiscal year as it struggles to be profitable in the sector, and has also embraced 3D TV technology.

Most shoppers were curious but also cautious about the new device on Wednesday, however.

"I want to watch on a big screen," said a 47-year-old man who has a 37-inch TV at home. "I'll wait for another year before buying," he said.

Another customer, 33, said: "It's great that we don't have to wear glasses, which is a nuisance."

"But I didn't feel images were flying out of the screen on some programmes," he added.

Toshiba says images on the 12-inch screen are best viewed from the front and some 65 centimetres (26 inches) away.

"Customers currently think of 3D images as just an add-on function... but 3D is expected to become a standard eventually" with 3D films and video titles increasing, said Toshiba sales official Eiichi Matsuzawa.

Rival Sharp earlier this year unveiled a small glasses-free LCD touchscreen that shows 3D images for use in mobile phones, digital cameras and games consoles such as Nintendo's 3DS, to be released in Japan in February 2011.

FarmVille maker to double India staff

BANGALORE: Zynga, the online game company behind the titles " FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars," and one of the hottest Web startups, said it is starting a game development studio in India and plans to double its staff there this year.

Zynga Studio I, to be based in the company's office in Bangalore, will be the firm's largest office outside the United States. The company plans to hire 100 workers this year, adding to the 100 who work there now.

Zynga has 1,500 employees around the world.

About half the new employees would be game developers, the people who do the actual "coding" of the games, said Colleen McCreary, the company's human resources chief.

Privately-held Zynga has attracted interest from investors eager to get a piece of a company they consider nearly as hot as online social networks Twitter and Facebook.

Many investors have been hoping these companies go public, though, so far, they have limited their investor base.

Zynga started its India office last year with developers who worked on the company's database that defines how users interact with the games they play online.

About 100 developers here work on Membase -- an open-source database application that Zynga uses -- to connect its 25 million users worldwide.

Thursday's announcement, made at a news conference in Bangalore, would make the fast-growing information technology hub a key part of game development.

Zynga saw creative talent in India, but found it to be more of a "niche sector" in the country, said Shan Kadavil, Zynga's India manager. Instead, he said, "we expect to tap creative development people from the Bollywood industry."

Among that talent is Dhimant Vyas, an animator who designed the title sequence for the hit Bollywood film "Taare Zameen Par" ("Stars on Earth") by director, producer and actor Aamir Khan.

Zynga's games have become popular on Facebook and other platforms, but the company is inching toward platform-independent games that people can play on mobile devices.

It also has been rolling out mobile versions of its games, hoping to keep users playing them longer.

How APUs are changing computing

Window shopping on the streets of Paris or marveling at the hand-crafted , delicate designs of the latest haute couture can very well be done from your living room. All you need is a pair of high-resolution video glasses and your laptop.

Geeks call this virtual reality, but it has gone a step further to become interactive virtual reality wherein users can take in the sights, sounds and even smells of the Parisian streets as they explore their surroundings.

These new digital experiences are being powered by new processors with built in graphics capabilities, collectively named APUs or accelerated processing units. With glasses like the Wrap VR1200, recently unveiled at the CES 2011, all 2D and 3D video and head-tracking for many Windows-based programs can become a real-time experience.

Interactive virtual reality is possibly the future of technology and personal computing. The shift is radical as technology companies vie to crunch data meant for large format screens on small ones, provide longer battery life for their products and offer technology to keep their gadgets cool.

The APUs making this hi-tech story a reality are combining more and more graphic features to ensure a streamlined video-experience . Here are some of the exciting applications we can look forward to in the course of this year.

Advanced face recognition
Managing all those videos and photographs can be an arduous task. Fishing out the right ones on a later date can be even more difficult. Many user-friendly tools like Viewdle's face detection product can help identify and share photographs and videos easily.

Explaining the new technique , Laurent Gil, CEO of Viewdle says: "The software detects faces within a video or set of photos, and groups them into clusters of faces that our engine recognizes".

Once this is done, you can get a ribbon of thumbnails on their screen. "You can either assign a name to a person by typing it or by connecting to a Facebook account and selecting a name from your Facebook friend list," explains Gil.

Fusion chips have been played a crucial role in stepping up the speed and cuts detection time by more than half, says Gil. The next phase of evolution is likely to be even more exciting as Viewdle is trying to make face recognition between the desktop, cloud, and mobile device seamless and synchronized.

This means that users who build a faceprint database — that is a set of saved tags of a user's friends' faces —will be able to port the database between devices.

Changing Screens virtually
TV crew and videographers have traditionally used a green screen behind them while the cameras roll. This green screen can easily be replaced with any backdrop to match the theme of the program.

For instance, if a TV anchor is talking about the weather, the screen can show weather patterns. However, virtual green screens are available now. So, if you want to upload a video on YouTube, all you need to do is videograph the presentation.

It does not matter where the presenter stands – whether in a newsroom or near a pile of rubbish. Products like the ones by Nuvixa can be downloaded to create an instant backdrop. Note that this is just a basic application. A more sophisticated version is seen in the PowerPoint 10.1 application.

Talking PowerPoints
In the next version of PowerPoint (10.1), you can customize the matter in such a way that the presenter can actually be part of a final presentation. You can see the presenter on the screen, pointing out the various details and explaining the matter to users. Here again, there is a play on the background.

Instead of the customary backdrop, you can have a graphic sheet. New Z-Definition technology makes use of new sensors and computer vision algorithms to create new possibilities. But as Sanjay R Patel, CEO of Nuvixa says: "These products deal with next-generation video communication and require high computing power."

These technology products are expected to be launched later this year. "Chip maker AMD's latest fusion platform is used in this technology" , says Manju Hegde, corporate vice-president, Fusion Experience Program of AMD. The fusion platform is AMD's latest potent combo of graphics and a computer chip.

"There is a growing need for small form factors which can be seen in the current Fusion series of chips," says Manoher Bommena, senior director (Layout Design), who is part of AMD's Hyderabad team which developed two of the recently-launched fusion chips.

More personal video communication
This could be particularly useful for those using webcams and video calling services like Skype. Today, due to its placement, a person does not look at directly at the webcam but at the screen.

With the increasing processing power of new chips, an auto-correction could happen in real time, making it seem like the person is looking at you directly making the experience more personal.

This feature will be exploited by Skype as well as other video conferencing services in the near future. AMD's Fusion chips can be used for this as well.

The competition
While AMD has been making a lot of noise over its Fusion platform, a similar chip codenamed 'Sandy Bridge' brought out by Intel in early January was recalled at the end of the month. Though the problem isn't immediate, it may happen over time.

A Serial-ATA (SATA) port within the affected chip sets may work fine initially, but may start to generate data errors at a later date. According to Intel's official statement on the matter, "Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories.

Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue. For the first quarter of 2011, Intel expects this issue to reduce revenue by approximately $300 million . Total cost to repair and replace affected materials and systems in the market is estimated to be $700 million."

Why Facebook may not beat Japan's Mixi

TOKYO: Facebook Inc may not overtake Mixi Inc in Japan as the lure of connecting with friends overseas isn't enough for users to switch services, according to the US social-networking site's biggest games developer.

Japan "is one place where Facebook may not end up being dominant," Robert Goldberg, head of Zynga Game Network Inc's operations in the country, said in an interview in Tokyo. "Despite the unique cultural challenges that Japan presents, we fully expect Facebook to be successful in this market as they have across the world."

Facebook, boasting more than 500 million users and a valuation above $80 billion, is focusing on expanding in Japan and Russia, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in July. Mixi, which began social network operations in 2004, has about 22 million customers in the country, 10 times the number of Japanese Facebook users.

Concerns over privacy issues and early problems with site design and translation have also set back Facebook's popularity in the country, Goldberg said.

Closely held Facebook introduced simpler privacy controls in May and said it was reducing the amount of user information that's publicly available after US lawmakers and advocacy groups complained that the service shares too much personal data.

'Hard to change'
"Networks are kind of funny, they get an imprint on them when they get designed and it's pretty hard to change," Goldberg said.

Jonathan Thaw, a spokesman for Palo Alto, California-based Facebook, didn't immediately respond to a phone call and email seeking comment. Facebook, available in more than 70 languages, almost doubled its subscriber base in Japan in the past six months to 2.2 million, according to market researcher Socialbakers. The country ranked 49th in terms of total users registered for the service, with US topping the list at 148.90 million.

Zynga chose Mixi for the Japan release of its "FarmVille" hit title in December. The game is Facebook's second most popular title with 53 million users, after Zynga's "CityVille" with 98.6 million, according to researcher AppData.com.

Goldberg declined to disclose the user numbers for FarmVille in Japan.

Japan user controls
Mixi is better suited for Japanese users because it gives subscribers more control over who sees their content and personal data is more secure, President Kenji Kasahara said in an interview on Dec. 15. Users can also send Twitter-like messages limited to 150 characters, a service that began in September 2009 and isn't available on Facebook, Kasahara said at the time.

Masashi Tokuda, a Tokyo-based spokesman at Mixi, said the company's stance hasn't changed since Kasahara made the comments.

Mixi's monthly active users, subscribers who log in at least once a month, have reached 14.5 million as of Dec. 31, the Tokyo-based company said earlier this month. That compares with Facebook's more than 500 million users worldwide and 24.5 million for DeNA Co, Japan's biggest developer of social games for mobile phones.

"Japan is a unique marketplace and it is necessary to take care when bringing a global product and localising it to the Japanese culture," Goldberg said.

Nanolasers for faster microprocessors

WASHINGTON: Engineers have found a way to grow nanolasers - lasers able to produce beams at nanoscale - directly onto a silicon surface, potentially opening the way to a new class of faster and more efficient microprocessors.

"Our results impact a broad spectrum of scientific fields, including materials science, transistor technology, laser science, optoelectronics and optical physics," said Connie Chang-Hasnain, the study's principal investigator and computer sciences professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Increasing demands on electronics have sent researchers in search of better ways to harness the inherent ability of light particles to carry far more data than electrical signals can, the journal Nature Photonics reports.

Optical interconnects are seen as a solution to overcoming the communications bottleneck within and between computer chips, according to a University of California statement.

Because silicon is extremely deficient at generating light, engineers have turned to another class of materials known as III-V (pronounced "three-five") semiconductors to create light-based components such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers.

But the researchers pointed out that marrying III-V with silicon to create a single opto-electronic chip has been problematic. For one, the atomic structures of the two materials are mismatched.

"Growing III-V semiconductor films on silicon is like forcing two incongruent puzzle pieces together," said study author Roger Chen, who is a University of California, Berkeley, graduate in electrical engineering and computer sciences.

"It can be done, but the material gets damaged in the process."

The researchers overcame this limitation by finding a way to grow nanopillars made of indium gallium arsenide, a III-V material, onto a silicon surface at the relatively cool temperature of 400 degrees Celsius.
